Life Resuscitated

Seeing as I've never returned from a year+ hiatus from anything, I don't know exactly how to start. So, I'll skip the awkward placating and jump right into what has changed since I last wrote:

  • My fellow contributor/best friend, BeeCee, followed the path of so many others before her - Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, James Baldwin...Madonna - and became an expatriate. She now resides in Santiago, Chile, where she teaches English to college students and drinks Pisco Sour quite frequently. Check out her travel blog at http://www.brittaneysdestination.blogspot.com/.

  • I landed a job at a well-known cable network owned by an even more well-known film studio...And resigned last week. I'll write a subsequent post about this, but for now just know that I'm not a job-hopping flake (please!)

  • Jossip went on "pause", but really turned the movie off (ie. doesn't look like "play" will be getting pressed anytime soon). At first I was very sad, wondering to myself where I would get accurate media and entertainment news with a gossipy flavor from then on. But just like a best guy friend who has been waiting to get out of the 'friend zone' since junior high, Gawker stepped in to fill my void and I have been in love ever since.

  • I joined a professional organization for women in my industry (AWNY) and a mentoring program for urban high school students (M.O.V.E.). And you should too! You don't necessarily have to join the same ones I did. In fact, if you do and I don't know you in reality that might be creepy. But, nevertheless, networking within your industry and volunteering your time and skills to people are always worthy causes.

  • U.S. troops were pulled out of the Middle East, newspapers officially died and global warming ceased. Surprisingly (or unsurprisingly) none of these events have occured. According to Vice President Joe Biden, troop levels in Iraq will be at 50,000 soldiers by the end of August - down from 145,000 at the beginning of the current presidential administration. And while newspapers aren't officially DOA, the hyperlocal sites we envisioned back in 2006 are finally making sizeable waves in the media landscape. (Side Note: Patch.com is growing like a weed. A number of jobs are available with that venture.) And alas, global warming still seems to be heating up. Plus there's oil along the Gulf Coast...So, that is your 'Eyeore' sad news for the day.

  • I met my goal of eating lunch with cute guys in suits at Bryant Park (summer '09)...stopped dating, started dating someone new, stopped dating, spent time with a rebound, started dating someone new, got broken up with, heartbroken...started dating someone new... What can I say? The life of a single woman in New York City. No one said it was going to be easy and, as I told an intern who asked my advice the other day, "The dating scene in this city is as competitive as its job market. Bring your 'A' game."...On further reflection, I could've added "Always Be Closing"*, but that might've been too much ;o)

So, that's the short and the short of it. I'm thrilled to be in a mental place where I feel comfortable enough to blog again. So much creative energy and so many thoughts built up. Now I can - and will - share. But until then, please enjoy this random Youtube video that popped up on 'clips recommended for (me)'. Don't know if I Google searched something about ComicCon to deserve this, but found it amusing all the same.

Much love and success,

* Note: The ABC Art of Selling clip is harsh, uses foul language and is a totally inappropriate comparison for how dating relationships should go. I know this. So please, don't message to inform me of that. Love :o)
