Today was a pretty good day for me. It was the first day I worked for the temporary employment agency that I'd signed up for about two weeks ago. And here are a things few I've learned (already!):- If placed in the right position, temping can really be a contract-long job interview
- Still, if it doesn't lead to a more permanent gig, you've at least got a few more people who can vouch for your professional integrity (if you exhibit it ;o ) And you've expanded your network
- Plus, doing so solves the tricky problem of answering the interview question, "What have you been doing since you graduated/ended your last job?" HR managers, or at least the ones I've met, seem to respect the fact that you're getting your skill development hustle on instead of sitting at home on the couch...It's like in grade school, when you received an 'S' (satisfactory) for using free time wisely - for the record, I always got an 'S'. (needs improvement)/(unsatisfactory) is for suckers!!!
*Two final notes: For someone like me, who needs to stay active at all times, this is good. It keeps me from worrying/stressing/obsessing about hearing back from hiring managers of jobs I've applied to...But, a great temping firm that specializes in creative media jobs may not be available in your area. So, be...(are you ready for this?)...creative - no, scratch that, prove your ingenuity - and tell your temp agency manager about the type of companies you'd like to work at.
