Now that my prospects in other cities seems to have been exhausted (I can't even get a decent interview in my home state capital - sadness abounds), I can finally write this.Last week, I packed up as many of my things as I could fit into 2 suitcases, 2 carry-ons and moved to the Big Apple!
I had been contemplating it for some time previously. I just had to work up the courage to actually go through with it. Then, after my only bad interview ever in life, I definitively decided that home (i.e. Georgia outside of Atlanta) wasn't for me right now...or probably any time in the foreseeable future. My brain already knew, but a piece of my heart had been holding on to the notion that I could be unbiasedly successful and happy in familiar places.
So, what makes a 22-year-old from South Georgia think she can land a job in the media capital of the world? Here are a few things:
- I'd previously established connections with NYC HR people in my field before I got here
- I had at least 5 job leads going in, with interviews already set up when I touched down
- I interned at the largest media & entertainment conglomerate in the U.S. last summer
- My resume is pretty decent
- I have some time to play with: family friends agreed to let me board at their home and my parents agreed to financially support me during my "transitional phase"
- I have a number of friends and associates who live here
I know it was a big decision. But I think I'm experiencing some emotional dissonance because everyone keeps reminding me how big a deal it is and I don't feel it yet. Sure, I left my boyfriend 800 miles away to finish his last year at Georgia Tech. And sure I'd love to be closer to my aging grandparents who live in Alabama. And of course I wish I could be there to help my church chart its new direction and be a mentor for the youth. But right now I'm putting my goals first because I feel I have a higher purpose than just getting any job. I really want to make a difference in the media landscape one day, and I know I need to start in an area where there is room for growth...Ok, enough preaching. Here's a link to an ed2010.com letter about what I'm going through: Can I get a job in New York if I don't live there yet? I promise I didn't write it :o ) But the answer does support my move.
