Scanning the homepage of CNN.com today and came across this:
"College Web site posts sex, gossip, hate, rumor"
Apparently, some of my peers on other college campuses are crying foul on a new gossip site. They say that they don't want their exploits and rumored romps on the web for all to see. Some are soliciting their university administration's help in banning the site on their campus.
While they may have a legitimate complaint, I don't think their protests are going to result in much action. As long as the technology is there and a significant number of people are willing to use it, there's no stopping the wave of zero Internet privacy. My best suggestion is to work around it (i.e. don't join social networking sites, dodge the camera at parties so no one can blackmail you with pics later, become a hermit - you know), or use it to your advantage. Be a smart interactive user. Behave in a manner you would be proud of in any situation at all times and know what's out there about you (Google yourself). Also, if you don't like what you find, try to change it the best way you know how - be that contacting the content owner, like the students in the article, or indirectly/directly saturating the net with positive things about you (like a responsible blog on a topic close to your heart, perhaps ;o )
